Australian captain: A thudding update concerning the change of Australia’s red ball captain has jolted the Australian camp. Even since the loss of the four-match Test series- the Border Gavaskar Trophy against India at the Australian continent, the dark blotting marks and questions on Australia’s poor captaincy have resurged time and again.
In the recent update that has surfaced up, the Australian Test captain Tim Paine has hinted at stepping down from the position if the Australian Team manages to defeat England and lift the Ashes. He mentioned Steve Smith, the captaincy successor who would captain the Team in his place in Tests.

Who will be next the Australian captain?
In a recent interview with news.com.au, Paine hailed praises for Australia’s star player Steve Smith and acknowledged that he cherished playing under Smith’s captaincy.
“Obviously I don’t make that decision but the time I played with Steve as captain he was excellent. Certainly tactically he is as good as you get,” Paine was quoted as saying by news.com.au.
The current skipper mentioned that he sees an overlap of his captaincy tactics with Smith’s.
“He’s probably a bit like me when I was at the start of my captaincy journey in Tasmania – he was thrown into a very big role at a very, very young age and he probably wasn’t quite ready for it.”

Smith captained the Australian Team until the infamous ball-tampering incident- the Sandpapergate scandal that happened during Australia’s tour to South Africa in 2018, post which he was banned from playing. Paine feels that Smith still has captaincy acumen seeped in him and sees him as a haven for the captaincy spot.
“But by the time I came in he was growing into that role and getting better and better. Then obviously (in) South Africa events happened and he’s not doing it anymore. But yeah I would support him getting that job again,” Paine added.
Paine might step down from captaincy after the Ashes win
Tim Paine fancies giving up captaincy after winning their scheduled matches – one Test against Afghanistan and five Tests against England during the Ashes planned later this year. He feels it best to depart from the captaincy after winning the Ashes but also knows it is a tough job.

“At least another six Tests,” he said referring to the one-off Test against Afghanistan and the five-Test Ashes at home. If I feel like the time is right and we’ve beaten the Poms 5-0, what a way to go out,” mentioned Paine.
