MS Dhoni and Rahul Dravid as important as ‘larger than life’ Virat Kohli
While delivering his speech at MCC Spirit of Cricket Cowdrey Lecture on Monday, ICC CEO David Richardson said that the game of cricket needs its larger than life characters, but it also needs its more mellow exponents for staying on the good side of that line.
Richardson that while cricket needs players like Virat Kohli and Ben Stokes, it also needs the likes of MS Dhoni and Rahul Dravid as a balancing act.
“On the field, the cricket needs its larger than life characters. It needs its Freddie Flintoffs, Colin Milburns, Shane Warnes, Ben Stokes and Virat Kohlis but we also need Frank Worrells, its Mahendra Singh Dhonis, Colin Cowdreys to make sure that we all stay in the good side of the line,” he said.
Talking at the lecture, he touched on various aspects of the game and laid special emphasis on cheating. He said that anyone who is caught cheating will be handed a punishment.
No one Allowed to Tamper with the Ball
He said, “The laws are quite straightforward- no one is permitted to change the condition of the ball using an artificial substance. If you are sucking a mint or chewing gum with an intent of applying the cream or sugary saliva of the ball, it means that you are tampering with the ball.”
The former South African wicketkeeper also talked about the way players and coaches question decisions made by officials.
Winning is Important, but not at all Costs
“Too many coaches and team managers jump to the defence of their players, they also blame the umpires for being biased against their team, storming off to the match referee’s room to complain,” he said.
“Winning should be the main aim but not at all costs, not when you need to compromise the integrity of the game,” he added.
