Gautam Gambhir on MS Dhoni’s winning six: Gautam Gambhir was known to deliver on the big stages for India. One of his innings which will be remembered through the ages was his knock 97 in the finals of the ICC Cricket World of 2011. With today being the 10^th anniversary of India’s famous World Cup triumph. The former opening batsman emphasized on the importance of teamwork throughout the tournament.

In a recent interview, Gautam Gambhir stated that winning the World Cup was something that they just had to do, while, also talking about aiming for future glory.

“It doesn’t feel like yesterday. Not for me at least. It’s been what, 10 years now? I am not a person who looks back too much. Obviously, it’s a proud moment but you know what, it’s time for Indian cricket to move forward. Probably, now it’s time that we win the next World Cup ASAP,” Gambhir stated.

The 38-year-old also mentioned that being a valued member of that champion side gave him an extraordinary feeling like no other.

“There were no such emotions as far as I was concerned. We didn’t do anything extraordinary, yes we made the country proud, people were happy, it’s time to move on to the next World Cup,” he said.

Apart from Gambhir’s heroics in the finals versus Sri Lanka, it was MS Dhoni who stepped up that night and scored an unbeaten 91* while walking in at number four to bat. The duo developed a partnership of over a hundred, but Gautam Gambhir departed just three runs short of his century.

The Indian captain MS Dhoni carried his innings forward and was in comfortable position to win his side the game. It was in Nuwan Kulasekara’s over when MS Dhoni hit the iconic six into the stands to win India the World Cup and end the long 28-year wait in the process.

Plenty of Indian cricket fans have stated their love and admiration for that one six throughout the years. However, Gautam Gambhir has begged to differ, while, talking about how it was not just about that one individual or that one six, but a collective effort from the team which the nation needs to appreciate.

Unfortunately, in India, it’s only about worshipping certain individuals. I’ve never believed in that. In a team sport, individuals have no place,”

“It’s all about contributions. Can you forget Zaheer Khan’s contribution? His first spell in the final, where he bowled three successive maidens? Can you forget what Yuvraj Singh did against Australia? Or for that matter, Sachin Tendulkar’s hundred against South Africa?

“Why do we keep remembering about one six? If one six can win you the World Cup, then I think Yuvraj Singh should have won six World Cups for India, because he hit six sixes in an over (against England in 2007 World T20 at Durban). No one talks about Yuvraj. He was the ‘Man of the Tournament’ in the 2007 (officially, Shahid Afridi was) the 2011 World Cups. And we keep talking about that one six,” he further added.
