IPL 2021 Purple Cap contenders: With the 14th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) upon us, there’s plenty of non strop cricketing action to look forward to. The IPL is base for star studded personnel from across the globe. The unapparelled  display of skill with bat and ball makes it an absolute treat for cricket lovers. Talking about the bowlers in particular, there have been more than a few who have ensured their authority in the IPL.

Who will win Purple Cap in IPL 2021?

The best bowler who takes the most wickets is awarded with the Purple Cap, and that acts as further incentive for them to roll on forward. Let us take a look at some of the bowlers who can stick their claim to it this season.

Jasprit Bumrah  – MI Purple Cap Contender

Although a seasoned campaigner now, Jasprit Bumrah wasn’t appreciated as much by the fans when he was new to the Mumbai camp. His skinny appearance as well as his unconventional action was talk of the town. However, the fast bowler has grown significantly ever since in skill and stature, which makes him one of the most valuable assets for Mumbai Indians as well as his national team.  Jasprit Bumrah has picked up 109 wickets from 92 IPL appearances, at an economy of 7.41. Last season he picked up 27 wickets from just 15 games and was second in the list in the most wickets column. He will be looking to top the pile this time around

Shardul Thakur – CSK Purple Cap Contender

Shardul Thakur has been having the time of his life lately. From contributing to India’s historic Test series win versus Australia, to being one of the standout performers in the T20Is and ODIs versus England. Thakur has shown great character and will take plenty of confidence from his recent doings. Thakur has picked up 46 wickets from 45 appearances in the IPL at an economy of 8.82. However, he has developed the knack of taking crucial wickets at crunch intervals with his variations and could once again have a role to play for three time champions CSK.

Pat Cummins – KKR Purple Cap Contender

The Australian international might have not have the best of seasons in the previous edition of the IPL, but that does now undermine his true ability with the ball. Pat Cummins has been the stalwart for Australian cricket in recent times and his performances against India was a true reflection to that. In the IPL, he has picked up 29 wickets from 30 appearances. However, a fresh and recharged Pat Cummins can prove to be a genuine threat, with his pace, bounce and movement off the pitch.

Rashid Khan – SRH Purple Cap Contender

The Sunrisers Hyderabad are known to have a plethora of quality bowlers who often could end up competing with themselves. But out of those individuals, one player who is touted to be regularly among the wickets is Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan. The specialist wrist spinner is one of the most valuable properties in the IPL and rightly so. He has scalped 95 wickets from just 51 IPL appearances, which also includes two five-wicket hauls and an economy of 6.21. The best of batsmen have to be cautious when they’re up against Rashid Khan.

Chis Morris – RR Purple Cap Contender

The most expensive overseas player in the IPL will have the burden of expectations to deliver. However, Morris has proved his true potential with quite a few match winning contributions in the past. With Jofra Archer ruled out due to injury, Morris will have to lead the bowling attack. The South African international has picked up 80 wickets from 70 appearances in the IPL at an economy rate of of 7.80.

Yuzvendra Chahal – RCB Purple Cap Contender

The Indian leg-spinner has been Virat Kohli’s ‘go-to-guy’ whenever in need of a wicket. Chahal has done well over the years, and has picked up 121 wickets from 99 appearances in the IPL. Yuzvendra Chahal has often been praised for being able to contain and pick big wickets at the Chinnaswamy, which contains small boundaries in favor of the batsmen. His skill and experience with the ball in hand can once again be of big use in the season ahead.

Mohammed Shami – Punjab Kings Purple Cap Contender

Although the veteran fast bowler has missed out on quite a few matches in recent times due to injury, he is expected to be back for the IPL 2021. Mohammed Shami has been at his best in the past of couple of years or so, and his performances are there to show. He has 60 wickets from 65 appearances in the IPL, but 39 of them have come from 28 games in the previous two seasons combined. Shami is expected to lead the bowling attack, and have the onus to deliver big.

Kagiso Rabada – DC Purple Cap Contender

The Purple Cap holder of last season with 30 wickets from just 17 appearances last season. Kagiso Rabada’s brilliance was one of the major reasons why the Capitals made it to their first ever finals in the IPL. His inclusion in the Delhi side makes them a better team by a significant margin. Rabada has enjoyed his stay in the IPL as he has scalped 61 wickets from the 35 matches altogether. The South African international will be pumped to retain his crown.
