जब विराट कोहली इंग्लैंड के दौरे पर जा रहे थे, तो उनकी मंशा साफ थी. वो वहां जाकर रन बनाकर टीम को जीत दिलाना चाहते थे. और उन्होने एडजस्टेन में पहली पारी में ऐसा ही किया.

एक तरफ जहां तेजी से विकेट गिर रहे थे वहीं कोहली ने दूसरा छोर संभाले रखा और, इंग्लिश जमीन पर अपना पहला शतक ठोक दिया. उन्होने यह शतक 225 पर गेंद पर ठोका था. जब दूसरे दिन भारत अपनी पारी का आखिरी घंटा खेल रहा था, तब भारत के 9 विकेट 227 रन पर गिर चुके थे. पर कोहली ने पारी संभालते हुए शतक लगाया.

कोहली ने अपने शतक पर पहुंचने के बाद अपनी शादी की अंगूठी को चूमा, और अपने बैट को मैदान में चारो ओर घुमाया. शतक लगाने के बाद दर्शकों ने उन्हे खड़े होकर बधाई दी.

रविचंद्रन अश्विन के चार विकेट और मोहम्मद शमी के तीन विकेट के चलते इंग्लैंड दूसरे दिन की सुबह 287 पर ऑल आउट हो गया.

कुछ महीन पहले वेस्ट इंडीज के दिग्गज तेज गेंदबाज ने कहा था कि एक अच्छे बल्लेबाज के तौर पर अभी विराट को खुद को साबित करना है. एक अच्छा बल्लेबाज वो होता है जो जहां जाता हैं वहां रन बनाता है.

उन्होने कोहली को सबसे तीन अच्छे बल्लेबाजों की फेहरिस्त में रखा.

“कोहली एक महान खिलाड़ी है. वह खेल में बहुत अच्छा है , पर जब वो इंग्लैंड जाकर रन बनाएगा, तब वो खुद को दिग्गज साबित करेगा.” कोहली का रिकॉर्ड इंग्लैंड में काफी भयावह था. उन्होने सही कयासों को परे रखते हुए, खुद को साबित किया और इंग्लैंड में शतक लगाने वाले चौथे भारतीय कप्तान बने.

विराट कोहली से पहले मंसूर अली खान पटौदी, मोहम्मद अज़हरूद्दीन, और सौरव गांगुली ने इंग्लैंड में शतक लगाया था.

When Virat Kohli embarked on the UK tour, his intentions were more than clear- More than just being a part of the story, he wanted to be the story.

And that’s exactly what he did in his first innings in England at Edgbaston. Indian skipper Virat Kohli ended the agonising wait for success on English soil with a glorious ton as he slammed 149 runs off 225 balls.

Indian skipper’s 22nd century came at a moment when India were 227 for nine in the final hour of the play.

Kohli firmly held his wicket and added 41 runs with Ajinkya Rahane for the fourth wickets and stitched 48 run partnership with Hardik Pandya for the sixth wicket.

After reaching his century, Kohli gave a huge yell in celebration before kissing his wedding ring hung around his neck as the crowd gave him a standing ovation.

England were all out in the morning on 287 with R Ashwin taking 4 wickets and Mohammed Shami taking 3 wickets.

A few months back former West Indies fast bowler Michael Holding had said that Kohli was yet to become one of the cricket greats as great batsmen score runs wherever they go.

He had described Kohli as one of the top three batsmen of the world.

“Kohli is a fantastic player. I think he is extremely good, but I would call him great the day I see him scoring runs in England.”

The record in England was nothing less than a nightmare for Kohli but he improved his record and etched his name in the history of cricket greats by becoming the fourth Indian captain to score a century in England.

Virat Kohli became the fourth Indian skipper to score a ton as a captain in England after MAK Pataudi, Mohammad Azharuddin and Sourav Ganguly.
