IPL 2021: Vivo returns as title sponsor for the 2021 edition

In a big recent development, it has now been confirmed that Vivo has returned as Indian Premier League (IPL) title sponsor for the upcoming 14^th edition of the global tournament. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had earlier suspended Vivo from the 2020 edition of the IPL, however, during the recently concluded IPL 2021 Player Auction, IPL chairman Brijesh Patel confirmed the development in Chennai on Thursday. Dream11 which is an online gaming platform replaced the Chinese mobile and technology brand for IPL 2020 after a public outcry over the tournament’s association with the corporate in the aftermath of the debacle of military clashes at the India-China border in June 2020.

Originally, Vivo had backed the IPL title sponsorship rights for the period of 2017-2022 for nearly US$ 341 million which was also an extension of their two-year association since 2015. However, in the aftermath of the tensions on the border, BCCI were forced to suspend the contract with a one-line statement in August 2020 that read: “The BCCI and Vivo Mobile India Pvt Ltd have decided to suspend their partnership for Indian Premier League in 2020.”

After all the hassles, it was Dream11 who bagged the rights for INR 222 crores but this association was supposed to be for a single edition. It has to be noted that the title sponsorship forms a key part in the IPL’s revenue sharing agreement with the franchises as 50% of the sponsorship money goes to the eight IPL franchises which is over INR 20 crore per franchise. However, in IPL 2021, Vivo is once again back in the mix and everyone expects things to pan out in the same manner as before.

IPL 2021 likely to take place in Mumbai with the knockouts in Ahmedabad

According to the latest reports, the BCCI is very much hopeful of organizing the much-anticipated 14^th edition of the IPL in India. It is also reported that the IPL is mulling over the possibility of conduction the entire league stage of the 2021 season in Mumbai with the knockouts to take place in the newly built Motera stadium in Ahmedabad. The Wankhede Stadium, Bradbourne Stadium and the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai will most likely be the venues for the league stage of IPL 2021.
