Jack Leach became a cult hero after playing a resilient 1-run knock off 17 balls in the third Test of Ashes 2019. During his knock, he stitched a match-winning 73-run partnership with Ben Stokes to clinch one of the greatest Ashes victories of all time.

Born on 22 June 1991 in Taunton, Lack Leach completed his schooling at Trinity School before attending Richard Huish College to pursue further studies.

For Jack Lean, the journey from representing Dorset County Cricket Club to donning England jersey hasn’t been easy, to say the least. At just 14 years of age, Leach was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease, which made him vulnerable to infections. The disease often proved out to be a roadblock in his professional cricketing career.

Before making his debut for Somerset, Leach represented Dorset County Cricket Club in 2010. He starred for his team in the final as his heart-warming spell of 6 for 21 proved instrumental in winning the trophy.

He then enrolled himself in the University of Wales Institute to complete his degree in sports coaching. During this time, he also played for Cardiff MCCU and also made his first-class debut. He played his debut first-class match against Somerset in March 2012. He bowled as many as 41 overs but couldn’t get a single wicket.

In July 2012, Leach played first match for Somerset against a touring South African side, while his first-class debut for Somerset came against Lancashire in the 2012 County Championship.

Turning up for England Lions, Jack Leach made his international debut against West Indies A on 14th February 2018. He bowled a sensational spell of 8 for 110 to surpass Graeme Swann’s record of best figures by an England Lions spinner. Soon he was drafted in England’s Test squad for the tour of New Zealand in March 2018. Jack Leach played his first international Test match in the second Test of the series in Christchurch.

Jack Leach, thus far, has represented England in 14 Tests, picking 56 wickets at an average of 30.38.

In the one-off Test against Ireland in July 2019, Jack Leach was sent into bat as a night watchman to play the final over at the close of day’s play. He took everyone by surprise after playing a special knock the next day, scoring 92 runs. England won that Test by 143 runs and Jack Leach earned the Man of the Match award.

His best bowling performances came against Sri Lanka in the second Test in November 2018. He claimed 5 wickets for 83 in Sri Lanka’s second innings to help England win the Test by 57 runs.

Jack Leach Crohn’s disease

At the age of 14, Jack Leach suffered from a life-threatening Crohn’s disease. The medicines he takes to combat that weakens his immune system. On England’s tour to New Zealand, he was contracted astroenteritis and was later hospitalised with a bout of sepsis caused by his body’s response to the illness.

“I didn’t know too much about it at the time, how serious it could be, but I remember feeling very, very ill,” Leach told the PA news agency.

“I remember thinking, ‘Don’t fall asleep because you might not wake up’. It was that serious in terms of how I was feeling.
