The word sledging has a negative connotation as most often sledging involves using abuses and derogatory language to distract the attention of the opponents. But who says, sledging can’t be humorous and include some light-hearted banter? Sri Lankan wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella showed the humorous side of sledging as he tried to distract England batsman Jonny Bairstow by talking about his IPL contract and being left out from the Test team. And it seemed Dickwella’s strategy worked as Bairstow as out soon.

The incident happened during England’s first innings in the second Test at Galle. In the 36th over of the innings, Sri Lankan wicket-keeper N Dickwella tried to distract J Bairstow’s focus who was playing on 28 runs off 72 balls.
Dickwella commented about Bairstow that he was dropped from England’s squad for the Tests against India. However, he will play the IPL. The Sri Lankan cricketer also remarked that Bairstow is ‘playing for cash only’.

Bairstow didn’t respond to Dickwella and continued to bat. However, on the next delivery, he inside-edged the ball on his pad and the slip fielder caught the ball. The on-field umpire declared Bairstow out but he used DRS and the third umpire upheld the on-field umpire’s decision.

Sri Lanka bundled out for 126, England 62 for 1, chasing 164

England have a target of 164 runs and have lost two wickets for 62 runs so far. Once again, England’s hopes are on their skipper Joe Root who has made 2 hundreds in 3 innings in this series.
England has won the first Test and a win here will complete a whitewash. On the other hand, Sri Lanka can draw the series 1-1 if they win this match. Thus, the match is at an exciting stage where England need 102 more runs while Sri Lanka are in pursuit of 8 more wickets.
