One of the modern greats as far as white ball cricket is concerned in Rohit Sharma has always been an unfulfilled potential in the test arena. His test career was as good as done before he revived it at the right moment last year in the home season when he was asked to open in test cricket as well.
Rohit Sharma’s credibility at home in tests was never a question or any Indian batsmen’s for that matter. It was always the performances in alien conditions that had a question mark and after becoming an opener, Rohit Sharma’s first assignment should have been against NZ earlier last year but he got injured in the 5th T20I and couldn’t play ODIs and tests.
Rohit Sharma appointed as Ajinkya Rahane’s deputy
Rohit Sharma’s fitness was under the cloud at the start of the Australian tour and he didn’t travel with the Indian team which also meant that he missed the whole white ball leg. Now, after a lot of struggle, Rohit Sharma has been named in the test squad for the 3rd game against Australia. He will also assist the stand-in captain Ajinkya Rahane in the test.

This will mean that India are sure to make 2 changes to their playing 11 that they played in the historic boxing day test. One change being the forced one as Umesh Yadav is ruled out of the remainder of the test series. The other change will be the inclusion of Rohit Sharma ahead of either of Mayank Agarwal or Hanuma Vihari.
Will Rohit Sharma silence his critics?
Rohit Sharma is a naturally gifted player but his exploits in test cricket in tough batting conditions in overseas countries has always been under scrutiny. He has failed to deliver time and again and to be fair, he wasn’t given a long run like some other players.
This Australian series will be Rohit Sharma’s best opportunity to prove that he can be a valuable player in whites for India.
