The much awaited news is here and this time, it’s the official confirmation and not a mere speculation regarding the addition of 2 new teams to the prestigious league in the cricket world in Indian Premier League.
IPL 2022 will have 10 teams
A grand total of 10 teams will be taking part in the 15th edition of the marquee event in the Indian Premier League. In the BCCI AGM (Annual General Meeting) that held today, the apex body has approved for a 10 team tournament for the year 2022.
It was earlier said that 2021 will see 10 teams but since there is not much time left to do the needful, BCCI have arrived to this conclusion. A senior BCCI official said on the eve of the meeting that
“At this point, the 10-team IPL, if BCCI intends to conduct it in 2021, will be a hurried one given that the tendering process and a mega auction will be difficult to organise in such a short span of time. It is only fair that the approval is taken and the big 94 match tournament is held in 2022,”
One of the 2 new teams will be based out of Gujarat and it is more or less confirmed at this point in time. The competition for the 2nd team will be an intense one as there was a franchise based out of Pune earlier in this IPL. One has to wait and see for further developments on this issue.
Olympics 2028 to have cricket?
The another important thing that was discussed in the AGM was the inclusion of cricket in the 2028 Olympics and BCCI also made sure that they will support ICC’ s bid to include Cricket for the Olympics 2028 but they need to seek clarity from Indian Olympics Association before giving their word to ICC.
Meanwhile, the mini auction for the 14th edition of IPL will take place on February.
