Lakshmipathy Balaji is a former Indian medium-pacer who and has featured across all three formats of the game. Balaji started playing cricket in the Ranji Trophy in 2001 for Tamil Nadu and that caught the attention of the selectors. He finally got an opportunity to play for the national side in 2002, and played a pivotal role when India won the bilateral series to Pakistan in Pakistan. Interestingly, Balaji was one of the rare few Indian players to have played first-class cricket in New Zealand for the Wellington Firebirds.
Balaji was first introduced in the One-Day International (ODI) against West Indies, where he conceded 44 runs in four overs. It was followed by a few more poor performances in the home Test series versus New Zealand. However, consistent performances in the triangular series versus Australia in 2003-04, and Pakistan to follow was where he displayed his best.
