Of course, it’s subjective! Every individual has reasons for his own preferences, and more often than not, you may find yourself wanting for words to argue.
How can you assert your own point against that iconic moment when Mahendra Singh Dhoni swayed his bat in the air after hitting a World-Cup clinching six on Nuwan Kulasekara over the long-on? Arguably the most talked-about moment in India’s recent cricketing history!
It was perhaps the most satisfying moment for every Indian cricket fan, home and abroad, not only because it ended the then India’s 28-year-old wait to become the world champion, but also for the reason that Sachin Tendulkar had a world cup medal to don around his collar. It would have been an utter travesty, total unjust to the once-in-a-lifetime talent of Master Blaster, had it been a result other than India’s title victory at the Wankhede Stadium in 2011.
But it’s a mistake to deluge ourself in with the recent success, for India boast a rich cricketing history. Before Dhoni, there was Kapil Dev‘s 1983 team that, against all odds, quite high as well, created a “Sporting Fairytale”, and instantly became cricket folk tale. That run in England, which now feels like as if it was scripted by Cricket’s God themselves, for it had too many unfathomable comebacks, and then that final, that climb to the Lord’s balcony and of course that smile Kapil Dev had after holding the trophy in his hand, is just incredible.
Now in the current context, we have Virat Kohli, who has achieved some never-seen-before success as India’s captain. He is the first Indian captain to win seven successive Test matches, first Asian captain to win Tests in Australia, England and South Africa.
So it’s hard to name who is, or has been, India’s best ever captain, but former Indian test player Aakash Chopra has his say on this matter. Watch the video!
