India’s 16-year-old phenomenon Shafali Verma earlier slogged a powerful 39 from just 17 balls in a player of the match performance. She struck six boundaries, including four sixes, to help India to an 18-run win when Bangladesh (8/124) fell short of India’s score of 6/142.
But her striking was overshadowed by a bizarre mix-up between teammates Deepti Sharma and Veda Krishnamurthy late in India’s innings.
Both batters ran at the same end!
A communication breakdown had the two batters diving to reach the non-striker’s end at the same time in truly remarkable scenes. As India powered towards a strong score in the 17th over, Sharma clubbed a ball deep into the offside field before slipping as she turned to come back for a second run.
As the throw came in from the deep, Krishnamurthy simply kept on running towards the bowler’s end despite seeing Sharma desperately trying to scramble back to her feet.
With both players lunging for the crease, the wicketkeeper was able to calmly whip the bails off after taking a brief moment to watch the crazy scenes happening up the other end.
Here’s the Video:
India beat Bangladesh to get on Top
Krishnamurthy needed to make up for the ruthless execution of her teammate’s innings and delivered spectacularly at the death with a blasting 20 from 11 balls.
The run out turned out to be just a minor bump in the road for India, who went on to record their second win — putting them on top of Australia’s pool.
The win lifted India (2-0) to the top of their group, ahead of NZ (1-0) and Australia (1-1).
Bangladesh moved to 3-66 in the 12th over to give themselves a chance of causing a major upset.
But with the required run rate creeping up, Bangladesh lost wickets at regular intervals to fall short of victory.
