ICC mulls new global T20 tournament for 2023-2031 cycle

There are some significant news that are coming out from the ICC headquarters in Dubai. Cricket’s governing body is eyeing to introduce ‘Champions Cup’ event in both limited overs formats.
Proposed T20 Champions cup is grabbing eyeballs
ICC is looking forward to organize T20 champions cup event for the first time ever during the 2023-31 cycle. Broadcasters will be looking at this as a significant rise in the portfolio of ICC events while bidding for the rights during this cycle. This event will be comprising of 10 nations and with minimum of 48 matches for each edition. That will be another world cup size event in shortest format of the game. ICC has proposed to include this T20 champions cup in 2024 & 2028.
Apart from that, same will be replicated in ODI format as well but with fewer teams and matches. ODI event will outline the Champions trophy which was being held till previous cycles. ODI champions cup will be held in 2025 & 2029 with 6 teams and 16 matches. These events will be in addition to regular ODI world cups in 2027 & 2031 and T20 world cups in 2026 & 2030. There will also be world test championship finals to be held in 2025,2027,2029 & 2031.

ICC looking at increase in revenue generation
ICC CEO Manu Sawhney has come out and highlighted the need of a global event each year to inflow revenues and invest the same in smaller nations for improvement in facilities. And he believes that inclusion of these new events will go a long way towards achieving the projected revenues. Confirmation about these events is likely to come out after voting in the meeting to be held in late March.
Meanwhile, MCC has set eyes towards the inclusion of Cricket as an Olympic sport in as early as 2028 with Los Angeles edition. Notably, BCCI, CA and ECB are also preparing to expand their annual T20 domestic tournaments with clear windows in next FTP cycle.
