The Indian team once again has had a fruitful year in 2019 after remaining unbeaten in Tests and winning all of their 7 games in the ICC Test Championship.
In the limited-overs, they managed to win the ODI series in New Zealand and also registered the wins at home against West Indies and Bangladesh in the blue jersey. However, India could not win ICC World Cup 2019 after losing the semi-final against the Kiwis. The biggest reason behind India’s debacle was an unsettled middle-order and the absence of a reliable batsman at the number 4.
Indian selectors soon realized the need to find a long term solution to the number 4 and they looked toward none other than Shreyas Iyer. Since then, Iyer has made the spot of his own through his consistent performances. Now Indian Vice-Captain Rohit Sharma has thrown his weight behind the fellow Mumbaikar.
Shreyas Iyer will bat for long at No.4 for India: Rohit Sharma
The Indian limited-overs vice-captain feels that Iyer could be the player who might help India in achieving lifting another ICC trophy. Rohit Sharma also feels that now Shreyas Iyer has been given a long rope at no.4 spot, he will make the position of his own and will bat there for the long time to come.
Rohit Sharma Quoted “Shreyas knows that he will now bat at No.4 for years to come. He feels secure and can now execute his plans freely. The other guys will first need to make the respective spots their own. KL has had a good time and will go in with a good mindset moving forward. We can’t really judge them as a group after two or three matches. We need to wait till they have played sufficient matches together,” to Hindustan Times.
The Hitman also feels that the young guns need to play more matches together to gel and build a great tuning among themselves. “The problem is that between KL (Rahul), Rishabh, Shreyas, and Shivam, they haven’t played many matches together as a team. But that will happen now and once that happens, they will get some confidence. Things are changing now. Shreyas (Iyer) is No.4 now and he is doing pretty well. Rishabh (Pant) did well in the West Indies ODIs. Shivam (Dube) has started doing well. So, I am confident, our youngsters will step up,” he further added.
