Fernando played the tour match between Sri Lanka Board President’s XI vs Indian national cricket team and soon after he was called for the tri-match series. He was then named in Sri Lanka’s Test squad for their series against Australia in July 2016

In March 2018, he was selected in Colombo’s squad for the 2017-18 Super Four Provincial Tournament. In August 2018, he got selected in the team for 2018 SLC T20 League.

He debuted in a Test match in the second Test against Australia on 4 August 2016 as the main pacer of the team and he took the first wicket of Joe Burns in his very first over. He made his ODI debut for Sri Lanka in 2017 against India.

Records

In 2019, Fernando along with Kusal Perera constituted a 78-run partnership to win the match by one wicket. It is so far the highest last-wicket stand in a successful run chase in a Test match. It was also Sri Lanka’s second one-wicket win in Tests.
When Sri Lanka became the first Asian team to win a Test Series in South Africa, Fernando was a part of it where he took 3 wickets in first winning, bowling out Hashim Amla for a golden duck (It was Amla’s first international golden duck as well) and one wicket in the second inning.
